Late Summer: The Season of Transitions

late summer: the season of transitions: how to enjoy late summer @ energy with ryan

Late Summer is all about transitions.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, there is a 5th season — Late Summer — tucked between summer and fall.

It’s that time between the hot, forward movement of spring and summer and the inward, slower seasons of winter and fall.

Typically this season starts at the end of August and goes until the fall equinox (this year on Sept 22, 2022).

Imagine those warm days where everything seems tinted golden. The back-to-school shopping. The last vacation or gathering before the weather turns The feeling when you’re just a bit too ungrounded and you’re craving your daily routine. The push to add a bit more slowness to your life.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the element of late summer is earth and rules over the stomach and spleen. The emotion of earth is overthinking.

Earth is stable energy; a time to appreciate abundance and to start slowing down. It’s necessary to deeply nourish and fill up your cup at this time. Imbalanced, earth can be worried, and disconnected.

Although a short season, it’s very important. Giving your mind, body, and spirit the necessary time to shift, build, and release before the colder months.

Late Summer Practices

🍃 Send extra energy and love to your stomach and spleen this season.
🍃 Put your bare feet on the ground. Imagine the energy from the earth going into you feet and filling your entire body with nourishment.
🍃 Ask your body what nourishment it is missing and then give it to yourself.
🍃 Give so much thanks — to the earth, to your community, to yourself, to the world.
🍃 Find work with your hands (drawing, writing, knitting, whittling) to expel excess energy.
🍃 Create a daily brain dump practice so you can clear out any loops or worries. Burn the paper if you need to or share with a friend.
🍃 What is your relationship with the earth? What does it need from you?
🍃 Late summer is a time of nourishment, so start drinking and eating warm things and slow down on the ice bevvies and popsicles.
🍃 Look back at the end of February and “digest” all that you’ve accomplished and been through and experienced. What can you simplify and get rid of? What do you want to continue with?

A late Summer message from tarot

Deck is the Midnight City Tarot

3 of Swords;
5 of Coins;
3 of Coins

There have been some hard and disappointing things in going on. Perhaps you have felt powerless. Perhaps everything going on in the world has left you feeling worried and focused on lack. (And honestly, no one blames you and that isn’t your fault.)

This late summer message is telling you that those feelings are temporary. Like the season itself, things are transitioning. You have felt the heartache, you have ran from the cockroaches, and now you are literally moving to higher, happier ground.

A cycle is ending and a new one is beginning. And more so, help is on the way.

Ask your guides for support. Ask to be open to whatever is coming in. Ask to allow yourself to gently release what needs to be released.

And as you move into late summer and then into fall, only bring with you what feels good.
